Baseball Notes for January 21, 2013

HartGamel

With just three weeks until pitchers and catchers start reporting to spring training locations, the baseball offseason is winding down, but it’s not ending with a whimper. This has been one of the more eventful offseasons in recent memory, with constant activity, surprises, and even some quality free agents like Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn still available at this late date.

If the 2013 season can be half as eventful as this winter has been, fans should be in for quite a treat.

Unfortunately, this past week ended with some truly sad news about two baseball legends; considerably darkening this installment of notes. (more…)

Ray Peters: The Modern Moonlight Graham

Ray Peters

“Moonlight” Graham, best remembered as the tragic figure in the movie Field of Dreams, was a real baseball player, who really did get into only one major league game in his entire career without recording an at-bat. Unfortunately he is just one of many players whose major league career was measured in hours instead of base hits, home runs, and innings. Pitcher Ray Peters lasted all of two innings in the majors, but it was something he’ll never forget. (more…)

Playing Matchmaker for Some of the Top Free Agents

Even with the playoff action at a fever pitch, it’s not too early to look ahead at the free agent class of 2013 and how they might impact teams next season. Ultimately the number of zeroes on the checks will determine where the players sign, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean that they will go where they would be the best fit. Every player about to enter free agency has one landing spot that would work well for them and the team; it just depends on if they both realize it and if the money is right.

If I were playing matchmaker, here is who I would pair up this offseason: (more…)

My Rookie of the Year Award Ballot

The Rookie of the Year Award, also referred to as the Jackie Robinson Award by the BBWAA and the Willie Mays Award by the BBA, does not have strict voting standards other than the fact that the player must be a rookie. The award, though, has caused many arguments thanks to the way some perceive the standard at which the award should be voted. Fiers Defies Scouts and Numbers But Can it Last?

If you were to ask me in the offseason what my thoughts on Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers were I would likely have told you he barely has a shot at cracking a Major League rotation. In fact, I ranked him the Brewers 14th best prospect in the offseason and this is what I had to say about him: (more…)

Angels Made the Right Trade

The Milwaukee Brewers traded right-handed ace Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels last night in exchange for shortstop prospect Jean Segura and right-handed pitchers John Hellweg and Ariel Pena. The Angels, looking to win now made a move that I like despite giving up three good prospects. (more…)

Jed Bradley Shows #2 Starter Potential

Last week the Brevard County Manatees came to Tampa to face off against the Florida State League Tampa Yankees and I was fortunate enough to catch the Brewers 2011 first round pick Jed Bradley in action.

Bradley’s overall line of allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings was far less indicative of how he pitched in the game. (more…)
