MLB Draft Day: Open Thread

This is a thread where we will be adding links and other buzz we here heading toward the start of the draft. Be sure to come by and check it frequently to keep up to date with all the latest MLB draft information.

According to Kevin Goldstein (via Twitter) there might be a “crazy rumor” that agent Scott Boras might be trying to push Mark Appel down to the Nationals at pick 16.

-Keith Law tweets that the Royals could take Chris Stratton at #5 and Max Fried to the Orioles at #4 is increasingly likely.

-Jim Callis updated his final mock draft to include each teams total budget.

-Al Skorupa and Jeff Reese list their top 100 prospects in tonights draft over at Bullpen Banter.

-Rays shortstop Elliot Johnson is keeping it real on Twitter by reminding draftees that only 3% make it and you better love PB&J and Waffle House. Love EJ!

-Jonathan Mayo‘s latest draft tidbits include stuff on Pirates, Royals, and Giolito.

-Kevin Goldstein has a piece up that shows the best position players and pitchers selected at each slot. #28 is, well, you have to take a look yourself.

-Keith Law states in his chat that he has heard the Reds are ”out on two guys they’ve been linked to recently, Marrero and Giolito.”

-Law also believes Marrero will now be the Nationals pick at #16 according to his chat.

-Somehow just noticed this but Kevin Goldstein‘s last mock is up at Baseball Prospectus.

-In his chat, Keith Law gives us a glimpse of his draft day: “This is my day in a nutshell: I get a text saying “Correa to Seattle. Book it.” and then within an hour get a text saying “I was told Correa wasn’t their (Seattle’s) pick.”

-Law also states he does not think Rio Ruiz will be taken tonight and has not heard Trey Williams’ name mentioned as one going tonight.

-Top draft prospect Zach Eflin is chatting right now at Scout.com and he says he models his game after Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson.

-Minor League Rundown has one final mock up. Check it out!

-I (Jonathan Mitchell) asked Keith Law in his chat if Ryne Stanek would be the top pick this year if he were eligible and he said “Doubtful. I wouldn’t rank him there.”

-Keith Law also does not think Victor Roache will be drafted tonight.

-Through The Fence Baseball posted their final mock earlier today. Check it out.

-Danny Knobler says, via Twitter, that one scout called Correa “another A-Rod” and that the top four picks will go: Appel, Buxton, Zunino, Correa, and either Gausman or Zimmer at #5 to Kansas City.

-Keith Law says zero chance Mets take Giolito if he falls to them and his sources say they are taking a bat in his current chat.

-Al Skorupa of BullpenBanter tweeted that he is hearing Appel might fall and could be a hard sign if he does. He also spoke to a scout who state Ryne Stanek (Arkansas RHP) would likely go #1 overall this year.

-Keith Law updated his Mock and says Baltimore has emerged as a strong candidate to take prep pitcher Max Fried.

-Keith Law updated his Mock for Pittsburgh at pick #8 saying: “Dahl appears to be the choice here, again assuming that Almora and Zunino go ahead of them. That pushes Marrero down as far as 16 to the Nats.”

-After watching more video of Carlos Correa I think I (Jonathan Mitchell) would take him first overall if I were the Astros. Just me, though.

-Jon Heyman tweets what we are all speculating right now: Mark Appel to the Astros and Buxton to the Twins.

-Keith Law just posted his final Mock Draft 4.0 and plans on updating the picks as he hears from the teams and sources. He has Appel, Buxton, Zunino going in the top 3 and Lucas Giolito going #14 to the Reds with Lance McCullers not going in the first round.

-Dave Cameron over at Fangraphs talks about how teams can unofficially draft down under the current CBA in the draft.

-Here is a link to our final Mock Draft where our writers Mikey Schwarzte and Jonathan Mitchell took turns making the selections. The MLBdirt Mock goes 95 picks deep to the end of the second round.

-Baseball America‘s last Mock is up with Appel, Buxton, Zunino going 1-2-3. Like us, they have Giolito going #17 but they also have McCullers falling out of the first round.

-Minor League Ball has a final mock that went up today.

-BullpenBanter took it one further and went all the way to the end of the third round in their Mock draft. Be sure to check it out.
