Ryan Braun the NL MVP?

The season is quickly coming to an end as we have about a week and a half left. The Brewers look to be the NL Central champs with their current 6.5 game lead over the Cardinals. Ryan Braun has been a huge piece for the Brewers and he could be the NL MVP.

Braun has been terrific this year. He is currently hitting .336/.400/.597 with 31 homeruns, 103 RBI, and 31 stolen bases. Braun has some of the best stats in the NL and let us take a look at how he compares to the rest of the National League

AVG OBP SLG wOBA HR RBI Runs ISO
Braun .336 .400 .597 .434 31 103 103 .261
Rank 1st 4th 1st 1st 7th 5th T-1st 2nd

Braun is also tied for second in the NL in WAR with 7.1. One aspect of his stats that really impresses me is his 31 stolen bases putting him in the 30-30 club. He is one of the two players in the league that currently have 30 homeruns and 30 stolen bases; Matt Kemp being the other. To have that great combination of speed and power is very valuable.

Not only is Braun leading the league in many categories, he is doing so by a large margin. His slugging percentage is .032 points higher than second place and his wOBA is .019 points higher.

Another important part of Braun’s bid is where the Brewers are currently standing. For many voters, the individual’s team’s success is an important factor in the vote. It looks like the Brewers have the NL Central all wrapped up which looks great for Braun. If he finishes the season strong, Ryan Braun is my NL MVP.

  1. This really is such a great race and hard for me to pick. I think I’d go with Kemp right now but it is so close. My top 8 would probably be Kemp, Braun, Halladay, Kershaw, Votto, Tulo, Pujols, and Upton.

  2. Because playoff/team implications play so much into it, Braun will be the leader by default. Deserved? Yes.
